Is Online College Cheaper and Why?

16 Nov

You’re thinking about going to college, but are trying to figure out what’s best for you and your life? Firstly, college is for everyone. Having a degree under your belt, or any post-secondary education on your resume could never hurt. Well, I guess it could technically hurt your bank account… and that is probably a concern in your mind, which brought you here to me!

Try to think of it this way, college classes, online or not, are going to be costly regardless. Do not base your education around a price and as cheesy as it is for me to say, education is priceless. This goes hand in hand with your dreams. You want to go to college to achieve a goal or to get that dream job you’ve  wanted ever since you were a child, so why should you put a price on it?

Of course, there is a price on it – but you will have the job and salary to pay off your school loans! On the bright side, you can always apply for scholarships and grants to help reduce that negative in your account once you graduate.

With that said, base your decision on your goals, lifestyle and needs. Once you have decided on that, this is usually where the traditional classes vs online classes debate begins, because if your lifestyle and needs aims towards the online colleges, then the only thing that would be stopping you is the price, right? We have always been programmed to think the cheaper, the crappier something is and in some cases, this may be very true. So you’re probably wondering if online college is cheaper, and if so, why?

Like any college, the price  of online college ultimately depends on the college of choice and the area of study you are going for. However, here are some things that will help you determine how much online college will cost. The tuition costs are pretty much the same as a traditional college, but online education ends up being considerably lower in price in the long haul.  How so?

Well first, we’ll start with the obvious. An online college doesn’t need to lease land, build a University and all that jazz. Thus, they don’t need to make money to cover such expenses, ultimately saving you some coin.

Think of your travel time. You no longer need to pay for a bus pass, cab, car, insurance… whatever your way of transportation would be, because you can work on your course, where it is convenient for you.

Flexibility of taking online college courses is also going to save you money in the end because you won’t need to schedule your work around your schooling. You can schedule your schooling around your work. Makes sense?

Aside from the three main reasons as to why Online College is cheaper, there are other things as well. No buildings… no janitors. No building… no librarian. No building… no electricity bill.

The list goes on and on. There are a lot less expenses for the school to have their courses online which reflects on how much (less) money that need from you. So no, just because it is cheaper doesn’t mean it’s crappier. It’s just better!
