What is a Fraternity and is it for me?

26 Sep

Just like a Sorority, a Fraternity is a social organization of close-nit friends – a brotherhood. Of course like most things, there are horrible stereotypes about people that are in a Fraternity. Frat boys are assumed to be jocks, cocky, douche-bags, sluts… the list goes on and on. Wait a second.. fraternity or not, did I just describe the typical man? Oh, I’m just kidding! Stereotypes are rude assumptions made up from envious, insecure people. Scratch your previous judgement of fraternities and frat boys, because Hollywood’s Old School isn’t necessarily the most accurate idea of a fraternity. They are just a group of guys that like to hang out together… and maybe get a little crazy from time to time. The boys didn’t get to school on a Fraternity scholarship! Anyone of those frat boys could be taking any course your school offers, whether it be on how to become a psychiatrist or an online engineering program, so leave the judgement in high school! We’re supposed to be some-what of adults now, right? 😉

If you’re thinking of joining a frat, be prepared to go through the pledging process. It is just like when you tried out for your high school football team, or the rookie party back in your hockey days. It’s just a fun way to get to know everyone, and see if you are a good fit for the group. Who wants a Debby downer in the group? No one, so of course they do want to go through the applicants to make sure the group will maintain a close brotherhood after you join. If you are interested in being in an active, social group – then a frat is definitely something to consider. Frat life is full of fun, social events. Yes, parties are involved, but school events such as formal dances, fundraisers and community work are often done by Fraternities as well. They aren’t just a group of guys that get drunk, sloppy and sleep around…. they do more then that too! Just kidding again! 🙂 But jokes aside, a fraternity is no different then any group of friends that like to do things together!

What is a Sorority and is it for me?

There are a lot of rumours, stipulations and assumptions about what a sorority is, what sorority life is like, who is in a sorority, etc. and a lot of them aren’t the nicest or classiest to say the least. This isn’t necessarily the case though. Unfortunately, a lot of times when you think or a sorority or sorority girls, Hollywood movies like Legally Blonde, American Pie or Dukes of Hazard come to mind. I mean, sure – Sorority girls throw amazing parties, date frat boys and have a great time – but how is that any different from everyone else that attends school. I mean, even students taking online college courses do these exact same things, but it isn’t considered near as bad unless you have those Greek Letters on your clothes somewhere. Just because sorority girls are known for having fun doesn’t mean that they are dumb, promiscuous bimbo girls. They wouldn’t be in school if this were the case, now would they? Believe it or not, some of these girls are going for a psychology degree or to learn how to become a forensic scientist or how to become a cop! So before judging a sorority girl, remember that they can be in any program that that school offers.
Now that I got my rant out about petty stereotypes, I will explain to you what a sorority is. It is simply a social organization for undergraduates. Literally, it is just that.  It is a  group of social females who enjoy hanging out with their closet friends. Yeah sure! They get invited to the best of the best parties, and the wildest events – but it’s because they are in a social organization. Just like if you were in a robotic or art club. They hang out with their friends, go to school, they obtain their degrees, they’re just like everyone else. The only difference? This type of close-nit family of friends has a name to it, in Greek lettering.

Are you thinking of joining a sorority but don’t know if it is for you? As I stated above,  a sorority is just a social organization of female students. Just like most clubs, you need to “audition”, or in this case “pledge” to join. You will go through a series of events, questions and interviews with the current sorority girls to see if you click and are a great match for their group. Of course, if someone is a negative nancy and hates on anything social and is shy and quiet, they wouldn’t fit in well with a bunch of crazy, loud and fun girls. This is why there is the pledging process. You also have the opportunity to back out if you don’t like the girls either!

Sorority life can be different for anyone, but generally it is just living the college experience to the fullest. If you live in the sorority house, it can be different as you’d be living with a bunch of your sorority girls which inevitably comes with more drama and gossip then if you lived on your own or with one other person. It’s a big party of events, community fun and friends but many of the times, a Sorority requires you to maintain a high gpa – which can be a struggle for some. If you can multitask fun and your school work, then you’re set!
